This timing matters. For example, if a Flexible member gives written notice by 4 May, the notice can run from 1 May and the membership can end at the end of May. If the notice arrives after 4 May, it is generally treated as received on 1 June, so one calendar month runs through June. Standard members need to allow for three full calendar months instead.
If you are approaching the end of an initial 12-month Standard term, submit notice early enough to avoid an unexpected extension. Ask the club to confirm the exact end date in writing and retain that confirmation.
How to cancel your membership
- Read your membership agreement and identify whether you have Standard or Flexible membership.
- Check whether you are still within the initial commitment period.
- Send written notice to your home club using the cancellation route it accepts, such as the member app, online account, email, post or a written request handed to the membership team.
- Include your full name, membership number if available, home club, clear request to cancel, date of notice and a request for written confirmation of the final membership date.
- Keep a copy of the notice and any acknowledgement from the club.
- Continue making payments until the confirmed cancellation date. Do not cancel the Direct Debit before the club confirms the membership has ended.

Can you cancel within 14 days of joining?
David Lloyd’s UK terms provide a 14-day period after making a membership application in which you can change your mind by giving written notice. If neither you nor a linked member uses the club in that period, the membership can end and fees already paid can be refunded. If you or a linked member uses club facilities during the 14-day period, David Lloyd can charge a proportion of the monthly fee for the time used and refund the balance.
